cup of coffee and a bit of shade

Liberty Cafe, located at the top of South Third Street- has got it's new awning up. Special thanks goes out to Randy Corman of our esteemed Renton City Council, who saw the posting in this here blog about cafe owners Mike and Johnny's pending plea with the city about said awning installation and helped expedite things. A bit of shade on a day like Saturday was entirely welcome.

Renton Relay for Life

What was all that commotion over at the Renton Memorial Stadium - the loud speaker action, the cool tunes wafting over the warm river breeze? Renton Relay for Life - an inspiring overnight event that raises awareness for cancer, gives survivors a chance to celebrate, and families who have lost dear ones a chance to remember and give back.

I got there later than I should have this morning - the final ceremonies were all but completed, but still some people continued to circle the grounds. The involvement in Relay for Life helps support the American Cancer Society's programs, which is the largest source of nonprofit, non governmental cancer research funding in our nation. Stick that in your hat!

The crowd draws in people of all ages, backgrounds and persuasions. Cancer effects everyone's family. And I do mean everyone.

This cool map showed where all the participating Relay teams were - wow - quite a few teams out there. Kudos to all who were there!

What a beautiful night we are having - people are out walking, sitting on porches, visiting friends, swaying in the evening breeze.

Got a hankering for a good deli sandwich?

Hot, freshly made bread. Your choice of a Vietnamese sandwich or a good ole American sandwich. Coffee/espresso at the ready, big fireplace to cozy up to when it gets chilly in the Fall. Open from 7 am till 7 pm to meet all your eating needs. Sounds perfect, doesn't it?

The owners of the new Yoggi Yogurt, and the Pho Hoa restaurant on the corner of S. Third St., plan to open this Bakery/Deli Shop at the end of July, beginning of August of this year, just around the corner in the building that used to house the Secondhand Furniture Store. Hooray! Things in Downtown Renton never looked better!

Introducing the man in blue

Jim Gould, on the Renton Police force for 14 years - definitely a Renton favorite and a Renton best. Friendly, damn good at his job - another good reason to love being in Renton.

Outside the zipcode - breakfast,beach,Burien

Just minutes away is a beach front park with your name on it - Seahurst Park. It is just a gem of a waterfront park. And many Rentonites have been known to visit. Last weekend there was an extremely low tide and Renton friends (shout out to the Goetz-Granquists family!) went to explore and were treated to onsite tide pool officials helping identify the wonders revealed and keep everyone out of harms way.

If the beach becomes, I don't know, too blue - there are trails up on the hillside buried deep in the cover of towering trees and greenery. A great walk awaits you.

While in the very same neighborhood, why not stop by and have a wee bit of breakfast (all day) at the beloved Huckleberry Square Restaurant? The parking lot is always full, the place bustles with people and friendly service. The food is just basic, good ole American cuisine. It's been in operation for 30 years and it's cute and it's independently owned. Kinda like our Tommy's - except it is in Burien.

East meets West - Asian shopping at it's best

It's like shopping at Safeway, if you were in an South Asia. Miles of incredible products that suit those who like to cook Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino or Chinese food as well as an entire area that nods to the Mexican cuisine needs. The seafood counter is fresh and impressive, and you can buy your staples, such as milk and eggs here as well. The fresh fruits and produce section is so varied and lovely - where else in Renton could you find Rambutan right now, I wonder? Plus, a very nice cooler full of bottled beer to select from (I mean, come on - that's a staple to someone, right?)

Our Renton Viet Wah Asian Food Market opened about a year ago and received an award from the City of Seattle in 2008 in the Grocery Division. The Viet Wah Group has a restaurant, which some of the baked goods they carry came from, as well as other 2 other store locations. They began some years ago and have far outgrown their "found in Chinatown" beginnings. Viet Wah looks far and wide for the food goods they carry, sometimes working closely overseas with vendors to get the products they need.

One thing nice is that at the back of this very clean, very nicely appointed store (oh, and did I mention - really low prices?!) there is a sign showing you to the detached cafe front that Viet Wah operates selling Bubble Tea, Bahn Mihn sandwiches for just $2.50 and some hot food as well. It looks like a chipper little cafe with a couple of tables to eat at and an all around nice vibe. You can shop and eat all in one stop. I always like that - we should make sure that our appetites are assuaged before doing any serious shopping for sundry kitchen items. Otherwise you end up with a cart full of beer and dried cuttlefish, and crackers shaped like Hello Kitty's head.

Remembering

Veteran's Memorial - downtown Renton, corner of Main Ave. South and South Third Street. Erected in 2003 - and a beautiful spot. The last couple of days prior to the weekend I saw workers finishing some updates on the walls in time for this holiday. And people visiting, like these ladies here, to find dear names of family and friends and to share in remembering the souls that our nation has lost.

American Legion Memorial to Veterans of All Wars - located in the pioneer cemetery, Mt Olivet. It was a bright, blue day and the cars were steadily pulling in to disgorge family members, young and old, flowers and flags in hand to pay their respects. It was heartwarming and it was touching.

Playing at the water's edge

Seemed as if every nook and cranny of the Cedar River trail and the river's edge, as it skirts along Nishiwaki Lane was in use - families out playing, picnicking and sometimes taking a dip.

Perfect boating day - and many were aware of this. Happily aware.

Fisherman were out quietly trolling by, poles at the ready - but mostly I just saw empty nets and still hopeful faces.

This net's owner was asleep on the job - just sitting on the dock, pole in hand and deep into his snooze. Seems like a lot of extra trouble to just give yourself permission to take a nap in the sun.

Five Guys bring home the burgers and fries

Everybody and their uncle has been blogging and talking about how great the burger and fries are over at Five Guys - one of the more recent occupants over at The Landing. I had to go. I had to eat. I had to see for myself. And it was ALL true.

When you walk in, you pass a big box of roasted peanuts in the shell, which any customer is free to munch on while waiting in line for their burger feast. Next, you will see all the bag upon bag of potatoes waiting for their turn to become fries at your side and a sign that tells you where your fries hale from today. Ours were from Rexburg, Idaho - glad to meet ya!

The good news is that you just have to decide on a hamburger or a hot dog and how big to go with your fries. There is nothing else on the menu to confuse the ordering issue (oh, except for vegetarian burgers and grilled cheese for those noncarnivores). However, be forewarned - the regular burgers have TWO patties on them and the fries come in cups where there are just as many fries in your bag as in the size cup you ordered. Be careful - I am not exaggerating here, and you could be forced to eat even more than you planned on (which may in fact be a given at this place).

Five Guys has an incredible selection of fountain drinks and also the coolest Ice Tea dispenser I have seen in a while, and they offer fresh slices of lemon on the side. Sorta like the list of toppings that you can have on your burger - numerous, and all incuded in the price of your burger. The standards plus grilled onions and grilled mushrooms, jalapenos, BBQ sauce - it keeps going. When ordering bacon, I was told you could have extra for the same price. What?!? But they use 100% Peanut Oil for their cooking - no preservatives or cholesterol. That evens up the game.

The freshness, the great energy of the place (I saw 10 people working to prepare orders and being generally boisterous), the signs that boast of Five Guys great business over the years, is sure to make this establishment fare well in Renton. THIS was the kind of place we the citizens of Renton were promised when The Landing and it's occupants were first discussed. Unique. I think this is the only one in the state so far. Five Guys first started in Arlington,VA but is best known for it's presence in the other Washington - the DC area. Glad that they are doing so well that they landed up here. You will be glad to when you have sampled their wares. Good eating.

Barks,beers and little woofs

June 13th the Renton Offleash Dog Park will receive another good boost in the arm - the Barks and Beers event to benefit the park will be held at the Dog & Pony and the tickets are going fast. The Dog and Pony has always held human's best friend in high regard - the patio out to the side of the establishment is dog friendly and is used in the warmer months by many as a great place to dine on some great pub food and beer along with the furry "other half".

And while I have your attention - I want to put in a word for the smaller woofs in the crowd. Wookie, above, is a Chinese Crested Powder Puff, who weighs in at a whopping 4 pounds. Just this week he was grabbed up in the jaws of a much bigger dog at a dog park that does not have an area for "smaller dogs". His human, Sue Rider, hopes that in the entire 5 acres that is being allotted for the park, some consideration will be given to the wee folks who don't always have the easiest of times with those 80 pound four leggers. I second that motion. I have a wee one and he is just plain afraid of anyone else's shadow when it comes right down to it, even though he likes to make out with his initial annoying barking that that is not the case. Napoleon complex - owner diagnosed.

Tickets available now at the Dog for $30/$35 at door (but only some will be available)

Muffinry - the art of making and eating muffins

Rhubarb Muffins - shared amongst friends this morn, in the sun, with some good coffee in hand. Uhmm, that is the life. Ron Hughes, gourmand at heart, professed these to be the best muffins ever - and asked me to post the recipe so that his daughter could see it and make some herself (this is for you, Marissa).

Rhubarb/Applesauce Muffins
1 1/2 cups of applesauce (any kind)
1/2 cup oil (just a little less than full)
2 eggs
3 cups of whole wheat flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 heaping teaspoon of cinnamon
1/4 tsp of nutmeg
3/4 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 cup of chopped walnuts
1 1/2 cups of chopped rhubarb

Set oven to 350 degrees. Add applesauce, oil, eggs and vanilla and stir well. Then add dry ingredients and mix. Lastly, add walnuts and chopped rhubarb. Top with cinnamon sugar. Put into paper lined cupcake pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. This will make 15 good sized muffins. 12 to take out and 3 to leave for yourself at home (he he!)
This recipe comes from my own personal derivation from this recipe here. Happy Baking!

Where to get your lovelies, part 2

Voted Best of Renton for Antique shopping, and a great stop for looking for unique bits of flair for your home or kitchen - Antique Country Station. You might recall that the owner, Rod Stewart (nope, he doesn't sing - not professionally, anyways), also won the $500 gift certificate last month to CD Danza - a winning gift certificate that was associated with the Renton Reporter's Best Of Renton as well. Darn - that Rod had a really good month.

After 15 years of operating in that location, you could say that Don and his brother, Ron, are well versed in their field. There are a lot of lovely fancy glass and plate items, but just as many cute and funky vintage finds. It deserves to poked around on a regular basis.

My favorite has to be this sign that hangs in the front window- it is my personal shopping credo for as much of it as I can get away with. Why buy new when you can get something with so much more flavor and individuality from somewhere local. You know it's probably still made better than what is currently available - even with it being on it's second or third reincarnation.

Council Smouncil - who is Rich Zwicker?

You see him everywhere Renton needs him to be and he is running for reelection again this Fall. I am talking about none other than Councilman Rich Zwicker, fellow blogger over at Renton425 (opps? was I not supposed to reveal that?) Here he is pictured at the Spring Festival not too long ago and he was silly enough to agree to let me share with a you some of the lighter side of Mr.425.

!. Name of favorite pet. Of all time? That was Bill the Cat. He took me from my bachelor days all the way into marriage with Martha and he was a favorite of us both. He was a Cat’s Cat. I even got him registered in the Who's Who of Lawyers as William D. Katt, Animal Rights Attorney.

2. Breakfast food you eat all the time. Not big on breakfast. But when left to my own devices I’ll prepare a garlic/pasta/egg dish that would make most people choke.

3. Silliest human trick you are known for. Does being the mystery man behind Renton425 count?

4. Worst school moment (if you want to share). That they kept closing the schools I went to. Sartori-closed. Earlington—closed. Dimmitt—closed (but reopened later). Gave me a complex.

5. Belly button - innie or outie? Innie. But if I keep eating this way . . .

6. First date was where with the fair Martha (Mrs.425)? Cucina Cucina, Southcenter, after work (I was her secretary at the time).

7. Vacation spot you want to return to: Jamaica and Mazatlan.

8. Education regret - what do you wish you had studied, even if you would have never had a use for it. Currently, I’m without regret as far as education goes—I just returned to Renton Technical College to complete my degree and graduated last month!

9. How do you like your coffee? Half and Half. No sugar. Can’t stand the smell of cream and sugar in coffee. Had someone dump a whole cup on me on the bus on the way to work and I was nauseated all day.

10. Favorite food group. Meat.

11. What TV show are you embarrassed to admit you like? Gilmore Girls.

12. What color simply looks awful on you? Leopard print. Kinda OD’d on that back in the band days.

13. Worst Xmas gift you received – ever. Not me, but my nephew got catnip and bizi-balls from my mom. Of course, that’s because my nephew had the same name as my cat and took the wrong present. But he did think grandma was senile and didn’t say anything about the mix up.

14. Worst gift you ever gave – ever. An autograph.

15. Proudest achievement so far. Serving on the Renton Technical College Foundation Board.

16. Silliest thing you often do (and everyone kids you about). I’ve realized that I leave drawers open. And I keep getting crap about it.

17. Whose your super hero? I’m a fan of Daredevil. Wasn’t too happy that they had Ben Affleck play him, though.

18. If you were a woman, who would you like to be? Richard Simmons.

19. Best household chore that you do. Empty the cat boxes.

20. How do you get yourself out of a grumpy mood? 80's music.

21. Do you still send cards for occasions via snail mail? Of course. Anything else is tacky.

22.One of you top fav films. It's a Wonderful Life and Goodfellas.

23.What season is your best? Fall. By a mile.

24.Hobby you like the most? Online poker with fake money.

25.Are you funny? I am if you have a warped sense of humor. Otherwise, I'm just really annoying.

26.Why do you like being a council member? My Mother-in-law always said " you have to matter in life". Being a council member and helping our citizens is a great way to celebrate her spirit.

Stay tuned for more Meet the Council as more members willingly subject themselves to The Picaroon's investigative reporting into the softer side of Renton politics.

Cupcake Heaven

When cupcakes are involved, it's hard not to be happy. I recently tried a new flavor (for me!) of cupcake heaven at the Common Ground - Boston Cream Pie, and though I ate the whole thing in one easy sitting and was flying on a sugar high for the next hour, I would go back for another in a heart beat. Crystal, another fav barrista of Renton's best, suggested this particular cupcake - and the girl did not steer me wrong. Go get one - I am being far to generous even sharing them with you all, so take advantage of my moment of weakness.

For those of you who like to work for your baked pleasure, you can knit a delicate morsel from this pattern here. When you are through, just set that down , and go get yourself one that won't give you a hair ball if you attempt ingesting it. Then, send me a picture - because I love it when people knit cupcakes. It's the second best thing to eating them.

How's your workout routine these days?

Every other day, for one hour, she takes a good walk around town and is on the verge of turning 92. Meet Monica Holm, citizen of Downtown Renton, who gets her exercise regularly. I think she puts most of us more able bodied people to shame. Inclement weather will keep her at home, but on this nice day - Monica dons her cute flowered sun hat, and takes off. She told me that you can get pretty far in an hour. I am thinking we should all give this a try real soon.

Ceramic and whimsy

Ladora Barnum has a been researching world languages since she was 5 years old and you can see that reflected in the naming of the Earth Spirit Dolls that she creates totally by hand. Ladora is into highfire ceramics and the bodies and faces of her dolls are all made by herself, after which she paints the faces, and clothes them. Some outfits are thrifted, like the Doll Brizza who wears vintage, and others are handcrafted from swatches of cloth, leather, or very sheer delicacies. The hair is all hand dyed with Koolaid, which Ladora assures me is good for adding color, just not so good for drinking. The whole collection she has made is very lovingly crafted every detail of the way.

Some will look at Ladora's dolls with their darkened eyes and call them "dead looking creepy dolls". I know from experience. I gifted one to a friend, who fell in love with her creation immediately but she was about the only one who had such an enthusiastic response that night. Ladora shared with me that her mother was not initially the biggest supporter of her work either, until she sat her down and explained who the mercurial and fairylike creatures that she brought into the world really were, and then there was an understanding of her daughter's unique creations. Her doll, Lindsay, was the result of that night - and needless to say, Lindsay is a cheerful, smiling, but still black eyed doll wearing Winnie the Pooh, her mother's all time favorite character.

I myself have two of Ladora's ceramic beings and I adore them. One I bought for myself and the other was a recent birthday present. Meeting the artist who created them was a bigger treat than I had anticipated. Ladora is charming and ethereal and might be one of the kindest, soft spoken souls I have met in a long while. Meeting her gave me a much deeper appreciation of my budding collection of her local craft ( Ladora is living "next door" in Seattle).

Ladora's work can be seen at Happy Delusions on South Third Street in Downtown Renton. Ladora has left more of her work at the store since the Art Show a week ago took place and will be around again on June 19th when Mary hosts a very big show of all her artists entitled, Meet the Artists. So, save the date.

Rhubarb Season!

Well, the bountifulness of the summer is already upon us - the rhubarb is ready to be picked. One of our family favorites - in really any recipe, is Rhubarb. However, I will let you in on the best and simplest recipe ever for rhubarb -one that you and your family can enjoy again and again. Rhubarb Compote.

Soak and clean the stalks of rhubarb and cut into chunks. Place in a nice heavy pan (or whatever you've got) and put on a very low heat to simmer. Yep, that's right - don't add water, the rhubarb has plenty enough to make the sauce. It may take awhile, but this will cook down into a thick sauce. Add sugar to taste while it is still warm and then = EAT!

Eat it all by itself, eat it slopped onto of some vanilla ice cream, eat it for breakfast served over a sliced banana, add some strawberries to it and serve over shortcakes (rhubarb will take on the taste of the berries and give you more to serve at less the price!
Ask your neighbors for some from their garden - then be polite, and share some delicious compote with them - you will always have a ready supply of ingredients at hand that way

Renton Hill gets a bit of charm

You can see this gate to Renton Hill from the top of South Third Street in Downtown Renton - and I think it is rather charming. As you walk closer, you can see that it is still in the midst of installation where the plaques and final touches are concerned, but amazingly, this project just flew into place on lovely, warm Sunday. I am admiring how the red brick fits in with the other buildings nearby and that Renton is developing some historic "spots" to invite us all to walk and share our city's history. Way to go, Renton.

A bit of the gate detail and appeal above. This gate will also have a tribute to the coal miners and possibly (?) a piece of coal or a cave/coal riser(?). To be absolutely honest, I took a photo of the accompanying sign and I was still the none wiser. But, the city is looking for feedback, and have listed names (Vicky Persson and Fay Moss are the two Co-Chairs on this) so feel free to interpret it for yourself and weigh in for yourself. Whatever the final decision maybe, I saw half a dozen cars drive by and then slow to a near stop to look at this new addition. People are noticing. With the Dog Park's construction beginning next month, how helpful it will be for our out of town guests to be able to know where they are in Renton. Maybe more landmarks or signage are on the way?

This brick is a tribute to the Renton Clay Works 1892 - 1900, and the Denny Renton Clay & Coal Co., 1900 - 1965. But, they are still working out the finer details for the plaque that will be hanging just below. However, the brick you see above is authentic and from the Denny Renton Brick Plant itself- the official article, which is very cool.

Get physical and take a very satisfying walk up Renton Hill while inspecting the other gate that is said to reside at the top of the park and greenery that are right there. Location: Top of South Third Street, at the intersection of Mill and Renton Ave. South. Can't miss it - unless you are intentionally planning on it. In that case, bring the binoculars, grab a coffee and a seat outside Liberty Cafe and you'll be good to go.

When you don't wanna cook and you don't have too much

I am just going to come out and say it - I like our local Panda Express.

Tonight was just too hot to cook and eat in ( I marvel that I even get to write that!) and so Panda Express it was. $5.75 will give you a choice of fried noodles, fried rice or steamed rice and two main entrees. I think that is an amazing deal. I always have food to take home, the portions are generous.
My favorite finds so far have been the Orange Chicken (okay, not healthy but really tasty) and tonight, I had an eggplant/tofu dish that reminded me of times living abroad. While not every time do I have two dish choices that I am impressed with, there is a real touch of "flavor" to some of these offerings. Sometimes, like tonight, I am just happily surprised. Because of that, I return on a semi regular basis.
The other aspect of the casual dining/take out that I like at the Panda, is you can see that everything is being prepared as you stand in line for your turn - it's fresh. The glass refrigerator doors behind which box after box of fresh veggies lay waiting to be cooked is enticement enough. Looks a helluva lot better than other places I have worked or seen - and you all know what I mean!
So - go ahead - sue me for admitting my liking the Panda. I can take it . I also have admitted to dining at Rubattiono's on the regular for breakfast. I should be shot.

Down at the Pea Patch

The soil has been tilled, the plants are going in - when you pass the Renton Pea Patch at the corner of N.First and Williams, there are always a few green thumbs working the soil. The plots are all spoken for and have been for months - but there is always next year. The cost is cheap - $30, and you have a piece of earth that is 10 x 40 or 20 x 20 feet to make your own source of fruit and veggies for summer eats or pretty posies to liven your home from April to October.
These are strawberry plants that will bear fruit all season long - their second time around as gardener Charlotte, my host at the pea patch today, dug them up from her garden last year. They had a little visit in the hothouse before coming out into the sun with us today.
This is Farmer Dave and he is planting some onion starts right there. In a mere six weeks this tame looking pea patch will be in full bloom and thriving with goodies to eat.
The hothouse that sits adjacent to the pea patch is open to all the community gardeners to use, for a nominal additional fee and is a great way to get things going. Others use the hothouse and bypass the pea patch completely, taking their plants home for their own yards and gardens. Cooled by an evaporative air conditioner, the plant starts have a way to become healthy and strong before facing the potentially cold Northwest weather fronts.
Tomato starts, melon starts, berry starts - even flowers can all be found within the hot house.
Sometimes the tomatoes won't bear our little flirts of cool weather, and need to be protected from the elements with a covering like you see below. I don't know about you - but this shot had me thinking of a certain scene in the first X- Files movie - you know the one. Don't walk the fields late at night, folks. The veggies are all spoken for and they have hired a professional scarecrow already.

When a friend goes missing

When cribbage buddy and friend, Mike Ferguson moved out of the zipcode, the boys were starting to feel the pain. It's bad enough that they now don't have him to shoot the breeze over a competitive game at the local coffee spot (Jet City), but he gave up Renton for - what? Tacoma - it just ain't decent.

So, Don Hausken (center in photo) decided to paint an homage to this other fellow painter so that his presence could still grace the game (oh, and by the way Mike - the "fake" you is winning hands you never did in the flesh!). It took Don a month to complete and was just unveiled this very afternoon. It is a beauty. Some say even better than the original - naaahhh! just messing with you, Mike.

Mo, far left and Ron Hughes, far right are also part of the cribbage crew. If you like to play and don't mind the looks of this motley lot - come on down in the mid afternoon and pull up a card or two. Mike (check his out his mad art credentials here) - if you don't hurry back soon, the guys may decide they like the paint splattered one dimensional you better. And now where would that leave your cribbage game, hum?

Brandie is at Jet City today!

Brandie, voted the second best barrista in town (according to The Best of Renton poll, who were off by one!!!) will be making a special appearance for the entire day at Jet City Espresso, corner of S. Second Street and Main. Hours 9:30 till about 5pm. Go visit her and see what all the hub bub is about - and get some damn fine coffee or italian sodas to go with the good weather coming our way!

Please Note : the above hours were the "estimated" time you could find Brandie gracing the coffee stand on this past weekend. No harm intended - no foul.

Jet City Espresso Hours : 7:00 am till 7 pm

Eye Candy in Renton - again

There is just too much for me not to take photos of - please indulge me - I am not going to be able to stop myself. The lilacs are in bloom - scenting the air and coloring the greens. Rhodies, the large blooms, are about to crack a smile. The last of the tulips are opening their little hearts up and showing us one more look of their simplistic perfection before going away for an entire year.

What's happenin' on Third Street

So sad to see them go! If you haven't ever seen the lovely shop of antiques and new finds that was on South Third Street, then you have almost missed your chance - almost. Feathered Nest was such a great addition to the top block of our main drag. Sue Moeller and Melanie have been friends and business partners for awhile, and they paired together very nicely when they opened the store a couple of years ago. But things change and now Sue looks forward to having more free time and enjoying retirement with her hubby. The store has a huge sale going on - but things are being boxed up and moved , so call ahead for store hours.
Feathered Nest (425) 430-5411 914 S. Third Street

The Antique Mall on Wells Street, between S. Third and S. Second has been a favorite shopping stop of mine for sometime now. My entire home is graced with any number of goodies that I have found in Bev's store. Now, there are plans to move into the space adjacent to Rod's Antique Country Station at the top of S. Third. The plans are to have entirely new inventory, so keep your eyes peeled for good sales in the upcoming weeks.
Downtown Renton Antique Mall (425) 271- 0511 210 Wells Street

I haven't worn many hats that I haven't fashioned or knit myself these last couple of years, and maybe that was true for a lot of people, because the hat shop, Hats Exclusively For You, that graced S. Third just east of Cugini's has been gone for a little while now - so that space is available, if anyone is interested.

However, Jennifer Davis Hayes let us know in a recent email she sent around that at 601 S. Third a new Teriyaki/Burger joint will be going in - which will be great, because for a lot of us, Burgers are a food group we gladly eat from all of the time.

More Spring Flowers

I can't help myself - they are all so pretty - even in the rain.

Yeah! another crafty garage sale!

This is a photo of all the cool loot that I scored last weekend at the garage sale hosted by the Evergreen Ballet, housed in what many know as the old McLendon's store right there on S. Second St. and Burnett. Apparently they did not make a big enough dent in all of the costumes, and fabrics and crafty items that were for sale before - and although they are now out of tutu's, pretty much all the other goodies they advertised last week are still available to some degree. Starts at 9 am , this SATURDAY I say - go!

Support our local ballet this weekend

The Evergreen Ballet is having quite the event raiser this Saturday at the Fairwood Golf and Country Club. It is their first annual dinner gala and they have pulled out all the stops. The MC for the night is local TV personality Jim Devers and the tickets are 100 a pop (half of which is tax deductible). The live auction is what sounds good to me - 2 tickets to the Oprah show and lodging for 2 nights in Chicago, and an Edgar Martinez autographed bat and seats behind home plate - wow, these are impressive!
It begins at 6 pm and if you are interested, I am certain that even at this later stage in the game, your presence would be gladly welcomed. The proceeds will go the the Evergreen Ballet's new outreach program,Dance Alive and for scholarships.

The Garden is wet

I am embarrassed to admit that yesterday late morning, I actually watered some of the color spots that I had planted in pots over the weekend. Some had dry soil on top - and I guess I wasn't really thinking. I mean, Mother Nature is certainly taking care of our greenery as of late, hasn't she?

RUFF!! Renton's Dog Park

This is for the few of you that may not know that Renton is soon to be the proud owner of an Offleash Dog Park that will break ground come June. The location is on a 5 acre parcel of land owned by the city next to the Cedar River Trail - in yesteryear, a brick factory, and now just hillocks and foliage with some ruins here and there. Fast forward to summer, and it will be and incredible dog park that will, I believe, bring some really cool people (and pets) plus additional revenue to our little burg -yeah!
RUFF, the name of the organization headed by Debbie Englund and Kevin Poole (Operations Committee for the dog park), has only been incorporated since March 25, but the strides that have been made are overwhelmingly quick. Just a couple of weeks ago fundraising kicked off with an event at the newly opened Vino's at the Landing, Wags 'n Wine, which netted the park a whopping $8,100. But the money still kept coming in.
The most recent email that I received a week or more ago, stated that the count is at $13,000 and the city has agreed to start ordering the construction materials for the park and change the open date from August to June. Local support for this venture has just been incredible. The city has agreed to match the funds raised by Ruff, and go even further than that, and the Renton Community Foundation has stepped in to take the role of managing the funds and this qualifies the donations now made to Ruff for tax deductions. (For those of you interested in supporting - checks can be made out to Renton Community Foundation - RUFF Fund P.O. Box 820, Renton, WA 98057)

You can become involved at any level, join Ruff on Facebook, sign up to receive the emails that are sent as updates through rentonoffleash@gmail.com or mark in your calendars that the next fundraising event will be in June at The Dog and Pony Grill and Alehouse

What to do with the Sewing Blues

My baby is down - that is, my sewing machine needs to have some TLC and a tune-up. If you have every used a sewing machine on a semi-regular basis - you know that you can't live without one in the house that is is operating order. You might have the urge to create, or a repair emergency might need to be dealt with pronto. We sewers don't fare well when our tools are broken or gone.

Renton is so amazing that within our lovely little downtown - there are two places that you can go for sewing machine repair - or to purchase a new machine. Let me tell you - this is not common, and we are very lucky. Many of the creative or crafty inclined need to drive miles for what we take for granted on our old main drag here in Renton.

Sewing Machine Service Co., Inc.
315 Main Ave. S.
Renton, WA 98057
(425) 255 -8673
www.sewingmachineservice.com

Viking Sewing and Vacuum
305 South Third Street
Renton, WA 98057
(425) 226 - 8112

For those inclined to take up the craft of sewing, Renton Vocational College runs a few classes every quarter for those of varying stages of sewing prowess. Right now they are in the midst of Spring Classes, ( look here for what is on now), but come next quarter you could sign up. With the crunch on finances, there is more of an interest in the crafts of old - the art of sewing being one of them. Mary Collen, of Sewing Machine Service Co., Inc. is planning on a class that introduces the basics of sewing repairs in the near future. A class that puts the sewing needle in your hand so that you can hem your own pants, or replace that broken zipper without having to pay the tailor or dry cleaners to do it. Empowering new sewers - that is what it is all about. Join us, won't you? Here is a recent local article about what a lifetime of joy it can bring.

Yummy Yoggi Yogurt Update

As the season warms ( it's happening, don't laugh!), I am certain I will be seeing more satisfied little faces that I know here at the scrumptious yogurt shop - Yoggi Yogurt. Things are always on the move over there at Yoggi's, where dear Dawn Hart is at the helm. Lovely chairs and umbrella outside for you to stop and have your bite, new espresso from Caffe Umbria to pair with your sweet indulgences and a crepe machine to soon be up and running.

If you haven't tried it yet - do! There are two for one cards out and about to be had, so you can take a friend (Liberty Cafe has some on the counter there! but have a coffee from Mike, first!)
Remember - this is the frozen yogurt that is good for you - probiotic, nonfat, possesses those live cultures that make yogurt good for you - and they have fresh fruit toppings to match (okay, and some other less diet friendly ones as well).

What I saw today - on Tobin Street

There is beauty in every part of our city - and I happen to be partial to some of the old parts.
This morning was a chilly one (was that 45 in the shade? yowsa!), but there was still some Spring to be seen in the yards on Tobin Street.

Art in Renton - or, what you should have done last Saturday Night

Alex Sandlin is the brainchild, the creator behind the wonderful artwork of Mourning Moon. She does incredibly detailed paintings and sketches, all done in this wonderful "Big Eye Art" fashion that is unique, colorful, edgy and fun.

Alex has been a painter and artist since she was very young - it ran in the family. She still loves to keep at her sketching - she says that it improves her painting skills with every drawing that she makes. I believe that she is truly one of those artists to watch. If you buy something of hers now, you will be saying "I knew about her back then" in a mere couple of years.

The best part of Alex's collection of work is that everyone can afford to have something of her work. She has pins, lovely pendants, book marks, cards - all with her signature designs on them. Can't afford the original - there is always something you can take home. Want to know more -look here at her own website.

Last Saturday, Mary Clymer of Happy Delusions hosted an Art Show and one of the two artists represented that night was Alex Sandlin. Alex brought more of her original artwork down than what normally can be seen in the store in the small space that Alex rent's there. The work is still on display for a limited time - so if you have a chance, head that way. It's worth the look.
PS: there was wine, there were cupcakes - you really missed out. And Alex lives in Skyway (unincorporated Seattle) but I am claiming her for Renton - so there!

Totally new way to meet the council

Randy Corman and his lovely wife, Cathy. President of the Renton City Council, running for reelection this Fall, a dedicated man of the city for nearly 2 decades. But who is he, really?
Hear all about the soft and squishy underside of Randy, in his own words.

Shredded wheat

Juggling on a unicycle

4. Worst school moment (if you want to share)

5. Belly button - innie or outie?
Innie

15. Proudest achievement so far ?
Raising my kids into who they are today tops everything else

Mum's Day Sweets

S o r r y - I can't let another batch of cupcakes, decorated cupcakes no less, go unremarked. Here are the lovelies I baked for Mother's Day. Our crew ate way too much, and so a few had to be sent home to be savored later. No worries - I adore baking them just the same.

Being Safe in the Neighborhood

Posted by PicasaCommon sense tells us that when the economy becomes stressed, people become stressed. Stretched out on bills, stressed out at work, and often deliberating more activities that are not always legal to make their ends meet, people veer towards residential theft and motor vehicle theft to make up the difference. Throw in your already known criminals, and the theft rate goes up.

Cyndie Parks is the Community Programs Coordinator for the Renton Police Department Crime Prevention Unit. She offers home inspections to see if you need to upgrade and improve the safety of your home against burglary and theft. She teaches classes a couple times a year for women's self defense, and she hosts Block Watch Meetings for anyone who wants to get their neighborhood motivated to watch each other's backs and let the criminal element know that your block isn't easy pickins
.
Every month, Cyndie compiles and sends to all attendees of Block Watch meetings within the last year, a newsletter giving a recap for the month of burglaries in the area you live in for single family homes. Cyndie will also note how many of those crimes were committed in active Block Watch residences. In additon, there is always a further news update and a list of suggestions on how to protect you and the loved ones. It is a monthly reminder of keeping what is important to you safe.

Now it is more imperative than ever to look at how you can make improvements on keeping your home safe and sound. We are so fortunate that Cyndie's free advice and assistance is still available to us when we are seeing downsizing in every arena of our lives these days.

I have had the pleasure of meeting with Cyndie Parks myself on a couple of occasions, the last one being at the North Renton Neighborhood Association Meeting that was held a little over a week ago. Many neighborhoods have such associations, (look here for yours) and you should look to see if yours has one - it is a great and painless way to be nominally involved in your community and hear first hand what is going on around your home.

Give Cyndie Parks a call today - (425) 430 - 7521 cparks@rentonwa.gov

Block Watch has many benefits: (to paraphrase one of Cyndie's handouts)
*The program is FREE
*The program is EASY
*It helps citizens feel better about their neighborhoods
*It helps to reduce crime on the block
*It helps get appropriate police services
*It helps to capture and apprehend ciminals

Rain does a body Good

I have to keep reminding myself that Spring Showers make nicer Flowers. We all grow better with a healthy dose of water in our system. Those gorgeous, blue skied days have to be paid for sometime along the way - and this is nature's payback period. I am thinking happy, coat-free thoughts and trying to remember that the weatherman is sometimes wrong.

Greg Atkinson - Storyteller in and out of the kitchen

"Atkinson has one hand on his All-Clad and one in the dirt. He's a storyteller with his cooking". Jonathan Kauffman/Seattle Weekly

This Thursday you have the chance to meet and hear speak a premier voice in the realms of Pacific Northwest Cuisine, Greg Atkinson. Author of books, newspaper columns, radio broadcasts on KUOW 94.9, restaurant consultant, prior head chef at the Canlis restaurant and now instructor at Seattle Central Community College - this man has a passion for local food.

He began by writing a weekly column in the San Juan Islands about seasonal ingredients, his recipes and the people that he got the food from, and things just grew from there. Not many individuals are blessed with the ability to create and then vividly write about it, but with 4 books already under his belt(here) and an incredible ability to cook, Greg is doubly blessed.

Tickets for the event are available directly at the Renton Historical Museum or at the door of the Carco Theater on the day of the event. This is the last of a wonderful speaker program that was created in tandem with the Smithsonian exhibit Key Ingredients - America by Food. I recommend calling in advance for your ticket. Last chance for the Museum - so dash!

There has been a great exhibit on at the museum, Renton Historical Museum that is, and if you haven't made a visit, this is the week to do so (the event closes this Saturday). Key Ingredients - America by Food is a traveling Smithsonian show that talks about the role food plays in our lives. America is such a wonderful melting pot of nationalities, all of whom have shared in what we individually come to think of as our family's usual table fare. How much do you really know about the food you eat, where it hails from and if you have that in common with others across the States? You can't help but enjoy the topic - Food - and there is an adjuct display created by Elizabeth Stewart and Sarah Iles of the musuem, that looks at Renton foodways in particular.
If you really love your food, you have an apron stashed away somewhere. Most likely it was a gift from someone - a handmade treasure passed down from a dear relative, or decorated by your grandkids at school. Every apron has a specific story - even if you only barbeque in yours once a year. All museum members, when they turned out for an event at the Key Ingredients exhibit, were asked to wear an apron. Everyone wearing one had a story connected to the apron they chose to bring - heartwarming stories, really. The apron string still ties some of us to our food culture today.
The museum is looking just wonderful these days, dressed in it's spring colors.

So drop by this week, walk through the exhibit that has nearly doubled the daily foot traffic the museum usually sees come through their doors. You won't be sorry - and you will definitely be feeling nostalgic at times and thinking some warm thoughts of your own traditions with food that began back at home.

Picture Perfect

This is Alice and her basset, Buddy - and this is exactly as I found them Sunday afternoon. On the porch, book in hand, two contented companions in the sun's warmth as ever you will find.

Alice and her husband, Ben moved into the old Dime house (if you have lived in the area for any length of time, that family name will resonate with you) 12 years ago and began putting in hard, hard work to make their home the beauty that you see today. There has been a house on this plot of land since 1908. This version is not that old, but the original was probably much smaller with some out buildings in the back. A piece of North Renton history - and just a lovely place to lit your eyes upon on this warmly welcomed sunny afternoon.

The salmon return to Renton

Out on one of the few bridges that span our local Cedar River, I looked down and saw that the salmon have returned! I know you would have to eyes like a hawk (literally) to see the fish in the photo above, so don't just take my word for it - go to the river yourself and look at all of the, Chinook, I believe, that are beginning to run. This phenomenon lasts for a few weeks, and a really useful handout on the fish that inhabit the river can be had, for free, at the library, which also spans the river.

Freaky, fierce Saturday winds

There was some crazy rain and wind storm action in the downtown Renton area come Saturday afternoon. The petals and branches from trees swirled, dipped and dived under the force of the malevolent wind. It broke off some large branches of a couple of the trees on our main South Third Street drag with apparent ease.
Kaboom! And down it went, without anyone or thing being hurt. But other Rentonites in different zip codes apparently were not hit in the same way at all. More's the luck for them!

Good thing Toto sized dogs were safely out of harms way. They surely would have been lifted and carried off to the wilds of Kansas if not for the foresight of their loving humans.

Every one has a holy grail - for some it is the best set of car rims, maybe a first edition comic book unearthed at a garage sale, or in our family's case - a good sale and a "free" something or other. I am certain you know just how I spent my Saturday morning....
The lines were long but moved apace - and there is always someone to talk to at McLendon's.
I overheard that they were prepared to serve 1,600 deserving customers with a pair of link sausage, two flapjacks, a cup of orange juice and some hot coffee. Impressive.
Three long, hot griddles going constantly, churning out some mighty tasty pancakes, complete with butter and maple syrup - your plate was fresh and piping hot when it was handed to you.
Long tables, decorated with flowers and a white paper table cloth awaited you. Standing room only. No one cared - they just happily munched.
This is McLendon's biggest sale of the year - the full parking lot attested to that. Hanging Baskets of Fuchsias for $17.99, and tons of other garden goodies. We stocked up. Hey - and the Puget Energy "Spin the Wheel" offered prizes, and with one spin, Mom landed a $20 coupon to McLendon's! It was promptly spent.

Bowling Buddies

Skyway Park Bowl and Casino is still a great place to go bowling. Major upgrade and reconstruction was completed a little over a year ago, and the place looks good. The lanes are still a good place to come and meet with friends, and I highly recommend joining a league. Unlimited free bowling comes with that territory, and it is one helluva way to get your exercise and have a sense of community.

Skyway Park Bowl also has some gambling available for you - pool tables, casino. Sit down asian cuisine restaurant and also a fast food version of the same were added in the upgrade. I thought it was pretty tasty. There is a banquet facility and birthday packages for kids or adults. I just attended a league bowling banquet and was pleasantly surprised at the roast beef with gravy and mashed potatoes that we were served - seconds, please!

My mother bowls in Skyway during the day without any qualms - but would not venture up that way later on in the day. Skyway has had some problems. But don't discount it just for that reason - Open Bowling Thursday through Sunday is just $3.49 plus tax before 5 pm. Shoe rental is $3.75. Best Value is renting a lane for 2 hours for $36 anytime before 10:30 pm. If you are feeling bold, Tuesday night is 2 for 1 Night from 9pm til 1am and all food and drinks are 50% off if you are bowling - this could be the start of something for you and your mates.

Happier Update - word amongst the bowling crowd is that West Seattle Bowl, who did a really lovely job upgrading their facility, has purchased the Hillcrest Bowl up on Sunset in the Renton Highlands. Hillcrest Bowl closed a couple of months ago, not the first time in their history to do so, but the leagues all had to move to other lanes to continue their bowling.Whew! I did not want to lose yet another bowling alley - they just never get rebuilt these days. So, with Hillcrest Bowl in the capable hands of West Seattle Bowl - we should have a really fine set of lanes to look forward to.

How blue the sky

I just felt that we needed to have pictures of the incredibly blue, blue sky that we were treated to on Friday. Such a wonderful day, it deserved to be remembered and recorded. So there it is, just some sky framed by the lovely leaves of the trees, ever reaching for the warmth and energy the sun casts down upon us, sparingly, we of the poor rained upon Rentonites.

Walking Art

Today on our main drag, I happened to see these fine examples of Sailor Jerry tat work coming down the street. Meet Joey and her lovely walking art.
Sailor Jerry designs are traditional old school tattoos that are very much in vogue again. Two of these tattoos were done by Magenta (owner) and the other by Jibo, both of them tat artists at the Diamond Tattoo Parlor here in town. Jibo won the 1st place for the best religious tattoo award at the Seattle Tattoo Convention - so you are in good hands over there.

This is a Dia de los Muertos skull head design. Ever seen the sugar skulls that are decorated in honor of the ancestors that have passed away on the Day of the Dead, which falls on the day after Halloween? That is the inspiration behind this design. Awesome.

Get your free comics right here!

The Comic Den on Wells Street, right in our DTR between South Second and Third Streets, is giving away comics - for free - this Saturday - no obligations to buy, just stop by. The owner, told me to tell all of you, so it must be true.

This establishment has been serving up a healthy dose of graphic novels, a very large collection of comics and other such collectible paraphernalia since it opened in 1991. Every Wednesday, all the cool guys I know get ready to go check out the new goods, 'cuz that is delivery day and there is a pile of boxes usually outside to prove it. The store is small but from what I have heard, has a great staff and the right goods which is why they have that such a loyal clientele. I even saw a new graphic novel with our new prez on the cover in the window. Maybe he really is a super hero after all.

Okay - I know I already posted this photo earlier in the week as the coolest pic, but I don't care! I have a thing for the Wolverine, and I am not afraid to share that - again.

The Comic Den 234 Wells Ave. South (425) 235 - 1663
Noon till they close at 6 pm - they will have enough comics for everyone!

So, I have a thing about Tulips

My favorite flower is obvious to you all by now, and I am going to stop apologizing for it here and now. These wonderful creations of nature were found as I walked about the city and admired people's yards and erstwhile gardens. One flower was blooming in a rather untended and unintended area - a bulb that found its way to a forgiving piece of earth and thrived without any human intervention.
People can sometimes be that way - good regardless of whatever may be thrown at them through the vagaries of life. Reminds us all that we know where our internal compass directs us to go, even when no one seems to be looking or give a care. Posted by Picasa
