I want to be artistic - lash out with a journalistic force to be reckoned with - or not. Just depends on the day, the amount of rain and if I get out of bed at a reasonable hour.

UnDisCovEred - the Music and Craft Show in Downtown Renton begins today at 2 pm TODAY in the most excellent of all spaces - Harambe. The brain child of Nich Sullivan of Tyrannosaurus Records and Mary Clymer ofHappy Delusions, and Spotlight Dance, this is a great way to spend this Saturday.
Matt Topping, who works at Harambe with those great after school programs, is helping the wonderfulness get on it's way today.
Crafters, like Kim Mazier with her funky and fun earrings, will be one of many stalls full of handmade goodies that you can shop. It's FREE to get in until 5pm today folks, so stop on by!! Once the music begins, you will be asked to get a ticket if you are not already holding one - but with the line-up, you'll want to keep hanging out.
Nich Sullivan of Tyrannosaurus Records and Bob Anderson Featuring: Cock and Swan Sweet Secrets See Me River (with local rocker, Kerry Zettel) Spotlight Dance Company will perform throughout the music program, and local Caffeine King, Mike Moskowitz, will be bringing the espresso to keep us all going.
This is a benefit for Childhood Cancer Sucks, so turn out and help rock the house til 11pm tonite.

PS Only our cool Renton folk could find such a great organization to give the monies from the event to - local, created a year ago, the Childhood Cancer Sucks foundation is run on volunteerism and dollars earned at events just like this.
Word is out - there is going to be regular music bookings at the Liberty Cafe and it all begins onFriday, October 16th. Thomas Starks of TStarks Productions is going to be bringing the sound equipment and providing the music talent on a regular basis at the coffee hang so many Rentonites call their own. This should be fun - and give another dimension of diversion to the DTR scene.
If you haven't had a chance to see the artwork of Kristi Hand that is currently on show at the Liberty Cafe, you still have time. Kristi's work will still be up till the beginning of next month, and she has been adding new pieces weekly. The above work was sold almost as quickly as it came in.
New to the collection are also lovely watercolors - of which this photo does no justice to the color and depth of her work. The walls are spilling over with her boisterous colors and lively brush strokes. It would be a true shame if you missed any of it.
Dressed to the nines in his evening performance finest, yesterday at the corner of South Third and Main, this member of a barbershop quartet that sang last night at theRenton IKEA Performing Arts Center was trying to attract an audience - the old fashioned way. Armed with a handwritten sign and a pair of very shiny black shoes to match his suit and tie, this young man smiled and waved at oncoming traffic in the hopes of getting a few more butts in the seats for the evening performance. (I didn't see the group listed on the website - so all the more reason to be inventive and find your audience).
He left the corner just as The Picaroon was arriving - though he did say that he would be back. I only wish I could have asked for a tune or two to go with the sign - that would have stopped a little traffic.
You can head over to the Liberty Cafe at the top of South Third tonight in the DTR and have your eardrums filled with the heavy metal tunes of the local Renton band, PUMMEL. From 8 till 9pm, Pummel band members, all Renton boys, will be playing outside in the area fronting Mike and Johnny's cafe and the happening store, Happy Delusions.
This is all part of the First Friday Block Party Fun that began a few months ago - and the partying just keeps a goin'.

Tyrannosaurus Records, our little burg's one and only independent music store, has laid down the carpet and put up some rad graphic art created specifically for the store by Adam Jones. New stock is coming in, as well as other cool merchandise like shirts and the like. You can also find a coupon on the front counter that offers a 10% discount on purchases of 10 bucks or more, so this weekend would be an excellent time to go in and check out the wares.
Adam Jones, who lives up in Lynnwood and is a graphic designer by trade, came to know owner Nich Sullivan through his sister. Seems that both Nich and Adam are from Kansas (and yes, they are very aware that they are not there anymore, Toto!). Adam designed the logo on the front door and the Tyrannosaurus business cards. The work is eye catching and meant to be fun. You can tell by the pic above, these guys have absolutely zilch in the way of natural humor.

Barritone Ukulele and guitar playing Amy Bleu was belting out some great tunes Sunday afternoon at the Tyrannosaurus Records on South Third. The second day of free live music in the store to help kick off the grand opening of Renton'sonly independent music store, Bleu played original tunes off of her three CD's (two of which are on sale at T-Rex) and sang what was her third performance in a 23 hour period. Amy liked her visit to Renton the best - as we hung on her every lyric and showed her the Renton love she so richly deserved.
Amy and her band are located in Oregon, but sometimes Amy hits the road and does some solo work, like the Shelton Farmers Market, a cafe in Tacoma and then here to Renton. Her CD's feature her bassist husband, Matt and also the accordion/xylophonist. Check out her website hear toe see what you so sadly missed.
Nich Sullivan, owner of T-Rex, has a great ear for music, and the weekend with Laura Jorgensen, Jonathan Kimball and Amy Bleu was a great line-up of talent. Nich hopes to have live music at the shop twice a month, so stay tuned. His wife Samantha, owner of Spotlight Dance, and he will be collaborating on a huge live music and dance event on November 14th at the Renton Civic Theatre. 4 live bands will play, there will be a dance program and art featured in the lobby. Fun stuff so check in at the blog for the shop here and stop by and shop for some tunes.
Sooooo, tonight was marvelous live music hosted by the music maven himself, Nich Sullivan, owner of newly opened (try today) Tyrannosaurus Records. First on the docket was the amazing songstress and accordion player, Laura Jorgensen. This instrument is definitely making a come back, and certainly is in the competent hands of this local artist. Laura will head to Boston for the upcoming school year where she plans to gather a band together, and she is one to keep your eyes and ears peeled to hear and see. Due to the wonders of the modern music scene, I was able to purchase an EP entitled "The Wings and The Waters", with 4 original songs for the affordable price of 5 bucks. Local, affordable, and worth the investment. I already foresee that this shop will easily find ways to part me with my holy dollars.
Jonathan Kimball was featured next, with an mean steel guitar and an acoustic guitar that he used to serenade and seduce our earlobes, regaling us with original works and songs that were finely honed and a treat to hear. Newly released CD "Optimisms" was the source for many of the tunes this night and was well worth the easy $10 asking price. While I could not find a video of his music to upload for you, click on over to the Jonathan Kimball Myspace page to listen to a few of his finely wrought tunes. Just to give you an idea of the caliber of music this man is putting down, this is what the website CD Baby has to say:
It seems Jonathan Kimball can't help but make great music. With a background of collaborating in progressive rock, roots reggae, punk, and ska bands - no one would have expected his solo masterpiece would sound so beautiful and delicate.
Tomorrow at 2pm, Amy Bleu will be playing at Tyrannosaurus Records for yet another inhouse free concert. Amy's CD,Geek Love, which was just released in the first month of the year with her new band, is already available for purchase in the store and some songs feature the accordion/xylophonist, Adam Sullivan and her husband on bass, Matt Cornett. Amy herself sings and plays the guitar and baritone ukulele and also does solo performances. The Amy Bleu website describes the music as "Indie, Americana, Experimental. They hail from just south of our Washington border in Oregon.
The good news is - Nich, the owner would like to have LIVE MUSIC at his place at least twice a month. This would make for some incredible opportunities for all of us to widen our music appreciation and pleasure while having yet another cool evening destination in the DTR. The other good news is that my friend, Garrison, put 800 of his used and vintage records up for sale at the store as well - so you have no excuse not to go and stock up on some cool vinyl.

Please excuse the shoddy mess of my recording skills- this was all on the fly, only had my Blackberry phone standing by and I didn't even catch the best of what this newly formed duo were laying down this weekend in theDTR.
But, let it be said here and now - that there is mad talent between these two and a musical collaboration that is hard not to notice immediately. Yorusalem has the pipes of Lauren Hill, and I wish I could have gotten my stuff together quickly enough so you wouldn't have to take my word on it.Hard to believe that they just met one another a week ago at the Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes and things quickly moved from there.
Mike Dwyer and YorusalemZewolday just have the right feel for one another's music moves. Yorusalem has two other people she collaborates with, one is her fiance that writes more than he performs and leans towards hip hop/rap. Yorusalem has just begun to explore that side of the music scene, looking more for songs that speak of love and empowerment than anger and subjugation. Mike has seldom found a singer that the synergy has flowed so easily with and has a sensitivity and talent that quietly oozes from the guitar. Both may be showing up for a show on S. Third Street soon. If you see them jamming together, stop and take a listen.
