Go Green in your shopping routine

The Salvation Army has gotten back to their previous habit of posting monthly calendars of their sales promotions for the month and including it with your bill of sale. I have mine hanging on the fridge and use it as an excuse to take a walk in that direction every couple of days. Today was "Manager's Special" which turned out to be 50% off all clothing. Now, Salvation Army has some reasonably priced clothing - so take another 50% off and you have got yourself a deal. This store also has a very nice selection of furniture - I have purchased a few choice items for my home here - and tomorrow is 50% off furniture, so go shopping. Seniors and Military get a 15% discount everyday. $.85 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the needy.
While I am happy that there are concerned consumers who like to shop and donate where the most effort and finances are returned to those in need, I am personally a fair opportunity "thrifter" - I shop everywhere. My mission with these posts about "thrifting" is to get people to think about buying secondhand instead of new for a change and to encourage donating rather than dumping and adding to our landfills. If you are a family newly on the "edge" where finances are concerned - you can find all your family needs at thrift stores - really.

I'd much rather live in Renton, where on Sunset there are two 99cent stores across the street from each other and two thrift shops right across the street from each other, all within a block or so, than a place like Medina, where thrift shops and dollar stores are hard to come by.

So true - I call that stretch of Sunset "Savings Way" because Saint Vincent's and Goodwill are there, too. I love buying recycled products!

And while it's strictly retail, the Safeway remodel is phenomenal. The store looks beautiful and it is so fantastic that Safeway made the commitment to stay with that location and to continue to serve the community.

Freakazoid Freddy, based on your blog,I know you appreciate this too:

Renton has an amazing amount of inexpensive restaurants that have to use their cuisine to draw in customers - they have no fancy views, rich clientele or captive audience to help make money.

They simply have to make good food at a fair price - and we all are much better for it!

Within a five mile block, about the only type of restaurant we don't have is a French one: We have fancy steaks to vegan Indian.

Yay Renton :)

Sometimes it's struck me that Renton aspires to be an Eastside city, but why?
We've got great thrift stores, dollar stores, cheap ethnic hole in the wall restaurants, and lower housing costs.
French restaurant?
There were plans to put one downtown on 3rd, near GHY bikes, ( maybe where DC's Bar & Grill ended up?), but for whatever reason it never materialized.
