A Visit with Aunt Harriet

"Moses" was her nickname - she took 19 trips to the South and freed over 300 slaves in a 10 year period of her life. Harriet Tubman told Frederick Douglas that she never lost a passenger on her Underground Railroad. A fearless woman in a time that was fraught with perils for anyone of color, let alone a woman who suffered from seizures that made her fall fast asleep. The injury was caused when she stood between a field hand and an angry master. A two pound weight was thrown and landed on her head. That would have stopped most anyone but never Harriet.
Saturday, February 14th at 11:00 am, Karol and James Brown present "A Visit with Aunt Harriet" at the Renton Historical Museum. This is a free program and I cannot stress enough how wonderful every offering on the museum's Speaker Program has been - and I am certain that this will make a nice addition to your Valentine's Day morning.

A little bit of Texas in Renton

Texan BBQ - it's all in the dry rub, the low and slow cooking, the use of hardwoods to get that good, smokey flavor and the sauce always comes on the side. Our little slice of Texas is located at 304 Wells Street, in the heart of downtown Renton - Cedar River Smokehouse. With 12 different sides and catering, delivery and take away - this is a very versatile and delectable place to eat.
I am never here as often as I would like, but it is always consistently good. I am personally partial to the Chopped Pork and Smoked Chicken, while my Mom loves her some ribs - of which they have two styles - Mesquite Smoked Beef Ribs or St. Louis Pork Ribs. Their mac and cheese is awesome. Open 7 days a week (see above) there really is no excuse why you shouldn't try them soon. Redhook is on tap - and they have peach cobbler for desert. You don't have to wait until the summer to get yourself some 'cue.

Love the one you're with...

Back in 1976, a famous illustrator came up with a great slogan to help New York's economic development agency at a time when the recession was hitting everyone hard and the word bankruptcy was hanging in the air. Milton Glaser's design has lovingly been replicated and appropriated ever since, all across the world, even here in Renton. Mary Clymer, owner of Happy Delusions on S.Third, returned home to Renton last year and went to City Hall to get her "I Heart Renton" button, just like the one her grandfather wore everyday for 20 years back when she was growing up. None were to be had. So now Mary makes her own and sells them at her amazing store - for a dollar. At a time when many of our own pocketbooks are being hit and we are being called to spend locally, it doesn't hurt to show your good intentions on your sleeve - or jacket - wherever a cool pin for good 'ole Renton can be seen.
