Exene of the band "X" plays Renton

Tomorrow is Record Store Day across the land. Tyrannosaurus Records welcomes Exene Cervenka of the popular LA punk band of the 70's, X , for a concert that is free for all ages. Exene is poet, vocalist, musician, artist etc. and on a tour throughout the West Coast, bringing music to the people at her own expense. Copies of her latest album, Somewhere Gone, will be on sale as well as some special X Band vinyls that curious minds will have to turn up to see the treasures unearthed. This is Exene's first solo album in almost 10 years, so you should hot foot it down.
Exene announced last year that she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, but refused to let that get in the way of completing her tour. Gutsy, talented lady. She played last night at Easy Street in Queen Anne, having kicked off her tour on April 7th. Here is a link to a music video recently released featuring her exhubby, Viggo Mortensen( I can't help it =he's yummy!) and a great interview from late Fall.

Nic Sullivanof TRex Records, recommends you start showing up at 1 pm. Nic has been bringing some amazing talent to Renton as of late, and The Picaroon apologizes for not having posted more about his amazing commitment to bringing music to our zip code.

UPDATE: Here's Exene performing in Renton today and word is she may make it back our way this Fall. How lucky can we get??

Record Store in Renton is ramping up

Adam Jones, graphic designer and Nich Sullivan, owner
Tyrannosaurus Records, our little burg's one and only independent music store, has laid down the carpet and put up some rad graphic art created specifically for the store by Adam Jones. New stock is coming in, as well as other cool merchandise like shirts and the like. You can also find a coupon on the front counter that offers a 10% discount on purchases of 10 bucks or more, so this weekend would be an excellent time to go in and check out the wares.

Adam Jones, who lives up in Lynnwood and is a graphic designer by trade, came to know owner Nich Sullivan through his sister. Seems that both Nich and Adam are from Kansas (and yes, they are very aware that they are not there anymore, Toto!). Adam designed the logo on the front door and the Tyrannosaurus business cards. The work is eye catching and meant to be fun. You can tell by the pic above, these guys have absolutely zilch in the way of natural humor.

Marvelous Music Mecca

Sooooo, tonight was marvelous live music hosted by the music maven himself, Nich Sullivan, owner of newly opened (try today) Tyrannosaurus Records. First on the docket was the amazing songstress and accordion player, Laura Jorgensen. This instrument is definitely making a come back, and certainly is in the competent hands of this local artist. Laura will head to Boston for the upcoming school year where she plans to gather a band together, and she is one to keep your eyes and ears peeled to hear and see. Due to the wonders of the modern music scene, I was able to purchase an EP entitled "The Wings and The Waters", with 4 original songs for the affordable price of 5 bucks. Local, affordable, and worth the investment. I already foresee that this shop will easily find ways to part me with my holy dollars.

Jonathan Kimball was featured next, with an mean steel guitar and an acoustic guitar that he used to serenade and seduce our earlobes, regaling us with original works and songs that were finely honed and a treat to hear. Newly released CD "Optimisms" was the source for many of the tunes this night and was well worth the easy $10 asking price. While I could not find a video of his music to upload for you, click on over to the Jonathan Kimball Myspace page to listen to a few of his finely wrought tunes. Just to give you an idea of the caliber of music this man is putting down, this is what the website CD Baby has to say:

It seems Jonathan Kimball can't help but make great music. With a background of collaborating in progressive rock, roots reggae, punk, and ska bands - no one would have expected his solo masterpiece would sound so beautiful and delicate.

Tomorrow at 2pm, Amy Bleu will be playing at Tyrannosaurus Records for yet another inhouse free concert. Amy's CD, Geek Love, which was just released in the first month of the year with her new band, is already available for purchase in the store and some songs feature the accordion/xylophonist, Adam Sullivan and her husband on bass, Matt Cornett. Amy herself sings and plays the guitar and baritone ukulele and also does solo performances. The Amy Bleu website describes the music as "Indie, Americana, Experimental. They hail from just south of our Washington border in Oregon.

The good news is - Nich, the owner would like to have LIVE MUSIC at his place at least twice a month. This would make for some incredible opportunities for all of us to widen our music appreciation and pleasure while having yet another cool evening destination in the DTR. The other good news is that my friend, Garrison, put 800 of his used and vintage records up for sale at the store as well - so you have no excuse not to go and stock up on some cool vinyl.

GO LISTEN - if you have any clue of what's good for ya!

Renton's got Music

Could it be, that in a city as large as Renton (numero five in the state, y'all - and growing!), Tyrannosaurus Records will be THE independent music store? Whatever the stats may bear out, the inclusion of some music in the DTR is way past due. Nich, the owner of the soon to open store ( signs say August) has begun his own blog to help get the word out. Free means of publicizing the store and a great way to let his new customer know just what to expect when he opens the doors.

Vinyl is here to stay folks, as suprising to some as that may be, and many bands have gone back to releasing on records. So, along with records, Cds and all sorts of music paraphanelia will be for sale in the store that takes over the space on South Third that The Feathered Nest once made their home up until a couple of months ago.

When I wrote briefly about this new store as the posters went up and the interest and foment on the street began to gather, I said that I had heard the words "indie tunes, new and newer bands and some mainstream". Oh, but it is soooo much better than that! The operative words in the Tyrannosauraus music vocab are INDEPENDENT and LOCAL.

"There are no genre-based constraints to the music we will sell! We are already working with bands/artists that are into reggae/dub, straight-ahead rock, blues, singer-songwriter, pop-rock, ambient, punk, prog-/art-rock, indie-rap, rockabilly, folk… And the list grows more by the week! Our one requirement is that all music we sell be made independently." FAQs about TRx

Check out the TRx Blog, keep your eyes peeled and soon you will be hearing tunes in the DTR!

Watch this space

When one door closes, another door opens. In the very spot that the vintage and decor shop, Feathered Nest, vacated on South Third St. is now to be the home of the first independent music store in Renton. Now that's sounding good. Welcome Tyrannosaurus Records!

The signs are up and we all saw St. Charles Place owner walking Nick, of Tyrannosaurus Records, over to the building last weekend. Seems like the deal has been done and the shop will be opening come August. From what I have gleaned from word on the street - there will be vinyl (this is definitely on the rise again in popularity with indie bands these days) and CDs for sale. A place to hear new and upcoming bands and the the tinkle of music on our main drag - exhilarating.

Keep you eyes on this store front - things are changing mighty fast on our ole downtown thoroughfare. And it's lookin' good!

What, is that music I hear?

I was sad to hear of the closing of Feathered Nest, but Sue Moeller (owner) assured me that she was really looking forward to enjoying retirement with dear Hubby. So when I heard today that as of July 1st, someone new will already be getting the key to this cute and cool location in the DTR (that's "Downtown Renton"), I was stoked!

Anybody down for Renton's first independent music store? Tyrannosaurus Records, where CD's will cozy up alongside the recent revival of bands issuing music on vinyl. Indie tunes, new and newer bands as well as somethings more mainstream is what I heard - but I will try to bring some more definite info in the coming days.

But, hey - that is enough info to get anyone excited!!
