Holiday Stories - come listen and remember

Ballads and tales of the great Hans Christian Andersen will be told by Alan Hirsch tomorrow at 11 am at a free program at the Renton History Museum. Allan told the story of toys to a rapt audience last year - so this is not the same program as before, so make sure to come hear him perform such classics as The Tinder Box, Five Peas in a Pod, The Wild Swans and more.

Today is the day that the thin boundary between the living and those that have passed over can be crossed. The day we call Halloween in Celtic tradition was a far more frightening day to the average Joe and Harriet of old. Come join storyteller Naomi Baltuk and her apprentice daughter, Bea, to hearing haunting scary tales.

Witches and ghosts and general horrific mayhem - not for the weak or faint of heart! (but FREE!) Come in costume - if you dare!

Renton Film Frenzy Curvee Awards Gala Tonite!

The Film Frenzy films will be screened tonight at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center - and it is FREE! - come and join the fun. The top ten films will be screened from 7 til 9pm tonight and the Curvee Awards will be given - $1,700 in cash prizes featuring a special performance by the EriAm Sisters.

This is the culmination of seventeen filmmakers 50 hour odyssey to write, edit and produce a 4 minute film masterpiece featuring some necessary bits about Renton for the Second Annual Renton Fim Frenzy Competition.

If you can't make it to this evening's screening, the following two evenings will give you ample time and place to partake in this local bit of creativity. You can even meet the genius behind the effort, as the filmmakers themselves will be on hand to discuss their works.

Comfort stories to warm your heart

The weather has changed and so will our diet. As Fall begins, find out about the interesting roots of that food staple, beans, and hear some heart and hearth warming stories from storyteller Karol Brown.

Tomorrow, Saturday at 11:00 am, the Renton History Museum hosts another addition of their free speaker program, sponsored by Humanities Washington,with Karol Brown telling us "comfort stories with a pinch of nutrition education. spiced up with multicultural folktales, a sprinkle of poetry, and garnished with songs."

Everytime I attend, I learn something new and am highly entertained - what a welcome way to spend a late morning. Can't praise this program enough, Renton. This program tomorrow is suitable for all ages - so everyone is welcome to come.

Poor you - you missed out on Amy Bleu!

Barritone Ukulele and guitar playing Amy Bleu was belting out some great tunes Sunday afternoon at the Tyrannosaurus Records on South Third. The second day of free live music in the store to help kick off the grand opening of Renton's only independent music store, Bleu played original tunes off of her three CD's (two of which are on sale at T-Rex) and sang what was her third performance in a 23 hour period. Amy liked her visit to Renton the best - as we hung on her every lyric and showed her the Renton love she so richly deserved.

Amy and her band are located in Oregon, but sometimes Amy hits the road and does some solo work, like the Shelton Farmers Market, a cafe in Tacoma and then here to Renton. Her CD's feature her bassist husband, Matt and also the accordion/xylophonist. Check out her website hear toe see what you so sadly missed.

Nich Sullivan, owner of T-Rex, has a great ear for music, and the weekend with Laura Jorgensen, Jonathan Kimball and Amy Bleu was a great line-up of talent. Nich hopes to have live music at the shop twice a month, so stay tuned. His wife Samantha, owner of Spotlight Dance, and he will be collaborating on a huge live music and dance event on November 14th at the Renton Civic Theatre. 4 live bands will play, there will be a dance program and art featured in the lobby. Fun stuff so check in at the blog for the shop here and stop by and shop for some tunes.

Free Summer Fun - Movies for the Young (and, okay, young at heart!)

The Regal Cinemas at The Landing are hosting a series of movies that are FREE for the whole family. Trying to figure out a way to keep the younguns' occupied? For the next two Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at 10:00 in the morning, head over to the movie theater and watch a film for free. The weather will be warming up these next couple of days, so you could just go in, relax with a tub of popcorn, and bask in the chill of aircon and beat the heat.
