When did you last hear a good Ghost Story?

Today is the day that the thin boundary between the living and those that have passed over can be crossed. The day we call Halloween in Celtic tradition was a far more frightening day to the average Joe and Harriet of old. Come join storyteller Naomi Baltuk and her apprentice daughter, Bea, to hearing haunting scary tales.

Witches and ghosts and general horrific mayhem - not for the weak or faint of heart! (but FREE!) Come in costume - if you dare!

Olde Fashioned Halloween Party Saturday!

Tomorrow is the day when we dress up and scare the neighbors if possible, eat way too much candy and light up the carved pumpkins one last time. My favorite way to enjoy the holiday is partaking in the community fun at the Olde Fashioned Halloween Party that is held downtown just off of Main Street and South Third.

The kids, the costumes, the games and the fun - it is all free, except for the hot dogs that you must really partake in to thoroughly enjoy the outing (you need a layer of real food to buffer all of the candycorn and snicker bars).

Bring the kids or just the kid within - you will not regret it. (Just look at FUN last year was!)

wormy and squirmy came to rest upon a cake

wanna make some of these graveyard delights?

First -
use a cake mix, follow the directions for cupcakes, but put some LUV into it girls, add chocolate milk instead of water, or buttermilk and when it comes to the oil - maybe use that stuff we call butter

Then -
take an 8oz of cream cheese (okay, this could be lowfat), room temperature, and half a bag of semisweet chocolate chips that you have melted carefully on a double boiler on the stove. whip together, add a teaspoon of vanilla for good measure, and approx. 3 cups of powdered sugar. frost right away.

Decorate -
with crumbled oreo cookies (about 7, without the creamy middles), and some gummi sour worms. makes it look like death warmed over at the cemetery.

Flat Moogie will be visiting madlycreative for a few days - so stay tuned to her crazy antics. she is from the south - who knows what that might end up being...

Add some spice to your life - Pumpkin Spice, that is

Painted Windows for the holidays - nobody has a better handle on it than Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes. Little Witch and her cupcake, what could be cuter. Why, having your own cupcake, of course.

The Picaroon got lucky once again and had the best bit of Halloween flavor in a cup with a toasty and spiced up Pumpkin Latte while watching a bit of Renton mosey on by the other day. Heaven in a cup.

Enjoy the season in more way than one - eat yourself into some Happy Halloween spirits - and start right here at Common Ground.

Make no "bones" about it, Halloween is on

One more house to go and get your "spook" on this coming Halloween. Yet another house on Williams between 3rd and 4th in North Renton that deserves your attention.

Many of the decorations are handmade by those that reside within this house turned cemetery. Ever year adds a a new layer of fun.

Bring the kids by for some coffin chilling action as the graveyard becomes "alive" just in time for the holiday.

Congrats to Dave and Evan for bringing their best game to the yard art for Halloween.

Remember your civic duty today and join a meeting

So many places to be tonight in Renton and all are good for your civic soul and the heart of your community. But how to choose? All I know is that your presence at any one of these meetings would be greatly appreciated - so wait to put on the fuzzy pink slippers and sweats tonight for a little while, and come hang out with your Rentonite friends.

The North Renton Neighborhood Association will be holding a meeting tonight at the Renton Senior Activity Center, 211 Burnett Ave. N., and the half an hour before the official start at 7pm is for drinking coffee, schmoozing with the crowd and have a snack or two. This will be on the ground floor this time around, as the usual room will be holding a Block Watch Meeting upstairs.

A great Block Watch Meeting with the ever informative and effervescent Cyndie Parks of the Renton Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit will be the guest speaker, 7pm at The Renton Senior Activity Center 2nd floor for anyone who is interested in coming. Some of my neighbors are thinking to first start out upstairs at the Block Watch Meeting and then move downstairs to catch the remainder of the North Renton Neighborhood Association Meeting. A little two-timing action, if you know what I mean. It could be good, if you are up to a little double indemnity.

The Museum Master Plan Informational Meeting is also occurring this evening from 7 to 9pm at the Renton History Museum which is located at 235 Mill Avenue South, which is one block south of the Renton Public Library. I wrote about this meeting last week, and as the museum's consultants share some of their findings in relation to assisting the museum with it's next 15 year phase, it is an excellent opportunity to have a say in how Renton history will be viewed and made.

Be a good Rentonite - make one of these meetings your preferred destination TONIGHT

Keeping it all safe - Block Watch Meeting tells you how

Posted by Picasa

We don't always know when and what to do when keeping hearth and home safe - and that is where attending a BLOCK WATCH MEETING comes in. Cyndie Parks, from the Renton Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit makes it all so doable and talks you through whatever queries or problems that you might have. The best part about getting involved with your community is meeting the neighbors. When we can put a name and a face to those who live around us, we are more likely to want to have each other's back and pass along any pertinent information about what is going on along the block. In a time when finances have taken a downturn, petty crime and home break-ins is on the rise. Don't let you and your home become the victim to vandalization or theft.

This Block Watch Meeting is open to anyone who is interested. Come along and be informed, and maybe at a later date you can organize a meeting just for your street. Being informed never hurts anyone - it's the ignorance part that gets ya.

My funny story about the photo I am using in this posting is about some friends whose home I often admire and pass. One night, the moon was showing brightly, the wisteria draping over the neighbor's porch was looking so enticing, that although it was nearly 10 in the evening, being the shutterbug that I am, I pulled out the camera to snap a photo. It wasn't but a minute before the door flew open and the occupants of the pretty house were on the porch. Never shy about telling anyone to mosey along if their presence was disturbing the peace ir threatening to get ugly, these were the type of folks you would want to have on your block. They are polite but protective and not shy about calling 911 when needed. I felt so embarassed - I hadn't meant for the flash on the camera to go off and that is what had set them to fly off their cozy couch and outside to check on the scene. The situation was explained, another photo or two was taken and we called our "good nights" and parted. I won't be doing that to my neighbor's again anytime soon - I'll let them catch up on their evening viewing of Survivor in peace.

In Renton, we have a great response by the Renton Police Department for 911 calls. Suspicious behavior SHOULD be reported and the dispatch officer can prioritze the call for the police, so you never have to worry that your call about a car that has sat in the neighbor's drive for too long with the engine running will keep the police from handling a more serious crime. But until you pick up the phone and make the call, no one will ever know if there is a reason to be concerned about your area. So, come to the meeting, learn when to make the call and learn how to make your home and community a safe and welcoming place as the days become shorter and the nights, longer and much darker.

More Halloween decorations to die for

More Halloween haunting to be found on Williams Ave. N. between 3rd and 4th. Can you stand it? This is just next door to the house of the Shlegel's that I featured yesterday. Whew - is there ever a lot of Halloween Spirit in that part of town!

I never realized that a sitting gargoyle could be so cute and attractive to me. Either my standards are getting lower or I am just getting that much closer to the undead.

Never too many pumpkins in my estimation.

Okay, so you know that you and the kids are just gonna have to come over to this block a week from this Saturday and check this all out, right? Because I have one more house to feature on this very block before I am done. So hold onto those witch and warlock hats - we are just beginning our Halloween neighborhood flight.

Presdidential aspirations begin at home - in Renton

When do our dreams begin? Where do we work out our aspirations to become the next president of the United States? How about at Talbot Hill Elementary School running for president? Olivia Davis ran a hard campaign. She had a website, she had signs and face painting. She had her proud Mom and brother out waving signs in her support the day of elections. Olivia's platform - Because she cares. Election results - stay tuned until tomorrow.

This news just in from Olivia's campaign headquarters:

Local reporters were on scene today to cover the election at Talbot Hill
Elementary School. It appears as if Presidential Candidate, Olivia Davis,
has quite a bit of support. Candidate Davis was upbeat in her assessment of
the election, stating that "I think it went great". Results from the
election will be tomorrow.

Renton prepares with ghouls and gobblins

I want to take you to the scary side of Renton town - to places where people go to see the true spirit of Halloween, and more than just getting a handful of treats, where they go to get a little ... scared.

This is the Schlegel home on Williams, between 3rd and 4th, in North Renton. Every year, their yard looks a little bit more creepy than the year before. Even though the yard is full and the lights are up, Todd Schlegel assures me that there will be more to come before October 31st arrives.

Put this neighborhood on your destination list this upcoming Saturday after next. It will be ghoulish fun and laughter for all ages. Adjoining houses have also gotten the decorating bug. I will show photos of those homes in the next blog or two, so stay tuned.

Many of the special yard decorations are handmade - like this ever so cute guillotine. How very charming.

Creepy children in masks walk the lawn in anticipation of your arrival.

The undead await your presence gleefully.

Here are two inhabitants of the Halloween House - Meera and Mason Schlegel. They love the holidays and hope you come over and have some fun. The house will be "haunted" for Halloween. There might be mischief and mayhem abrew here. Please come by.

The Schlegels, Todd and Christy, when not celebrating the holidays in such great style, run a pet walking and daycare business called "Rain or Shine Pet Care". Hit the link and check them out.

Renton Film Frenzy - the goods are in!

It's getting dark and Stefeny Anderson and her film cohort, Susan Johnson, are anxiously awaiting for the other half of the 22 entrees for the Renton Film Frenzy II - An Epic 50 hour Ahead of the Curve Film Making Competition.

As they sit in the front of Happy Delusions Store at the top of South Third in the DTR, wouldbe film makers and producers are trying to get the finishing touches on their masterpieces which will be judged this week with the top ten films being shown on October 27th, 7-9pm, at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center. The remaining film contenders can be viewed at the Downtown FilmWalk on October 18 & 29 from 7 - 8:30 pm. Details can be found at www.RentonFilmFrenzy.com

One of the filmmakers, Nate Jones, asked and received permission to use a Moby song in his piece. Nate also invited Moby to come and check out his film, as apparently the music star will be in Seattle for a show in the next few days. Just a little film trivia folks. We here in Renton think big, don't ya know.

Renton Tattoo Art - as seen on S. Third St.

Along a certain block or two radius in the DTR, you can see art in the making. Tattoo art coming alive on the skins of Rentonites and others who have traveled to our land to have colorful work become a part of their being. This is Carlee and this is her birthday tattoo with 15 hours of work already done. Magenta at Diamond Tattoo and Body Piercing is the artist. It has special ink that will allow some of the design to be seen only under a black light. Wow.

This is Jamie and her sugar skull tattoo, inspired by her Mexican heritage and The Day of the Dead but it also reflects her Native American Indian heritage. That is where the braids come in. This is just the first day working out the tattoo with Tor at Ancient Art's Tattoo.

Our Museum is growing - wanna come play?

Renton History Museum is making a plan - incorporating new ideas, heading in new directions and taking on a whole new identity. You wanna come along and have a stake in what our present and future generations will see and say about our town's legacy? A little like "Killroy was Here", but more defined.

The museum has hired a professional planning firm, Gyroscope, Inc., to help with charting out a course for the museum for the next 15 years. This is not a "one size fits all" approach to consulting, but collaborating with a team of super creative consultants that want to work out specific options to fit our town's needs.

Please come and be a part of a hands on Informational Meeting on Thursday, October 22nd from 7 - 9pm and weigh in with your thoughts and ideas. The consulting firm will be sharing with us the research they have done on Renton, showing similar museums in other areas that are doing things that might be of interest, and some visual exercises will make the meeting more interactively dynamic and fun. Elizabeth Stewart, Director of Renton History Museum, promises that it will be a "cool process".

Consider this your chance to be a part of history making. Adding in your voice, your view for those present and future audiences of Renton history. YOU are the special spice that is needed to make this gathering a go.

What I might also remind you, is that this is a great way to come and see the museum if you have never taken the opportunity before. Don't be shy - no one will mind if it's your first time. Come take a peek at what has come before you on the hallowed grounds of Renton.

Flea Market - oh, shopping heaven!

You remember what fun it was to shop at The Feathered Nest down on South Third Street, don't you? Well, Melanie and Sue, the previous owners of that cutely appointed store and St. Charles Place Antiques around the corner on Wells are joining forces and hosting a Flea Market. Those folks have a good eye for lovelies and it will be a welcome weekend outing addition to see what they have found for us to oggle and ooohhh over. I don't know about you, but I sorely miss The Feathered Nest and Sweet Grass. I bought the best smelling candles and many wonderful gifts for my home decor and for friends from those two establishments. This Flea Market will be a great time to catch up on some much needed shopping.

Come and get your pumpkin cupcakes - Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes

Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too. If you are nice, believe in the power of the pumpkin patch and share bites (occasionally, when forced ) of your cupcakes, then you just might come out ahead. The Picaroon certainly did yesterday, when taste testing the newest flavor at the Common Ground Coffee & Cupcakes - Pumpkin. Pumpkin flavored icing on top of a moist pumpkin spice cake. Heavenly harvest, come to mama!

The sweet side of blogging about Renton is getting to know the lighter fare of our little burg's life. Other bloggers have gone where The Picaroon has tread - and with far more serious and investigative baking intents. One food blog that I love to peek in on, Cakespy, visited our dear downtown to have cupcakes on a handful of occasions and then wrote a review. On the very day Cakespy wrote about our tasty little frosted treats, an even bigger blog began featuring her on her blog's front page, the wonderful Bakerella. So now, people across the globe were wishing they were in Renton and eating our deserts. So I am sincerely hoping that you are not taking Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes for granted and that you will soon be heading in for some fall festiveness. Little iced pumpkin cakes, cup sized and crazily scrumptious.

DC's Bar and Grill - Comedy Night

DC's Bar & Grill gets some amazing talent in for their monthly Comedy Night. This Thursday, Oct. 15th at 8pm for a mere $5 bucks you can see Vince Valenzuela (headlining Satelite Radio, TNT "Leverage"). Also appearing with him will be Dan Moore. Now, you don't have to be a big drinker or indulger to be able to come and enjoy the show. You can nurse your coke or beer, and just come to laugh - Pete, one of the three owners of this Renton DTR hang has told me that is A-okay with him. He would just like to see people come in, have a laugh and a good time. Maybe you'll like the joint, come back in another time, try his burgers and fries. Just maybe.

And you should - because Monday through Friday the bar has their $5 lunch menu, with daily specials and the burger and fries are always just $5 from 11 til 3pm. And they are good. Handmixed and handformed, they taste like the burgers you get at a friend's BBQ grill - good friends with good eats, that is. While there today eating my yummy burger, the Morrison Brothers were also there, extolling the virtues of the burger meal. Fifth generation Rentonites, they had stories to tell and wise cracks to make. One is about to become a daddy. The DTR is a slice of life area, people, and you should venture out into it as often as you can.

Make Art in Renton at the Uptown Glassworks - for free

Uptown Glassworks in the DTR is hosting a free class to teach you how to blow glass - it's called Make Art in Renton. Iif you ever wondered if you would rock at this, now is your chance to work with the molten lavalike stuff that comes out of the glory hole - glass. As I write this - there were only 4 spots left in this rare opportunity on this Sunday, Oct. 18th. The times were 12 noon, 2:30, 4:00 and 4:30 - and there is a maximum of two people per time slot.

This is certainly a way to wet your glass blowing whistle, as a half an hour will surely not give you more than a glimpse in to this wonderful art. But what a great way to spend a portion of your weekend, while the winds cool us down and the temperatures continue to drop. Let me tell you, the glasswork's studio is always warm.

Renton is unique for having such a place to shop, let alone learn this ageless craft. Drop by regardless - they always have something new to show.

The Changing face of Downtown Renton

The ever changing face of Renton - sometimes through updates, upgrades and a bit of spring cleaning. Other times - through demolition. The Renton Lutheran Church, a red brick building that had been erected in 1942, has seen it's last day. Though the building had been closed sometime now for services, it still seems a shame that it could not have gone on to serve the community in another way.

From this angle, one can almost remember the little white wood house, The Hut, that was on the corner of S. Second Street and Whitworth, across from Renton High School. One Rentonite, Bill Provin, recalls buying snacks and food as a kid at that very place. Memories of a past now far gone.

The entire site has been cordoned off and my shots are all taken through the gaps in the eight foot high rented wire fence. It is heartening to see that maybe the red bricks, piled to the side in the back, may be put to use again, in another place, in another enterprise.

.
The project on the docket for this soon to be vacant piece of land is a Compass Veteran's Center. It will provides housing and services for veterans in need, and there has been a whisper that the ground floor may be home for a bakery run by the Renton Technical College. Wouldn't that be a treat.

Elizabeth Stewart, Director of the Renton History Museum, has been documenting the loss of old buildings in the downtown Renton area, and her activity on the museum's Facebook is always chock full of information and photos. Here is what her posting on the Renton Lutheran Church had to say:

The Renton Lutheran Church broke ground for the building at 2nd and Whitworth in 1941. Built by volunteer labor during World War II, the congregation met first in the basement until the rest of the building could be finished; it was not until 1943 that the first service was held in the completed sanctuary. The church was dedicated in 1945. The church having vacated the building, in May 2009 Compass Veterans Center--Renton broke ground on a new facility of storefronts and veterans services to be completed in 2010.

Click on either of the links provided above to go directly to the museum's posting.

The plaque inscribed with the age of the building. I can't help but wonder how long the building that will be erected in it's place will stand. 67 years? Will it make it even to half of that age?

Downtown Renton and it's older buildings, while not always the prettiest when considering the historic sites that other cities have to offer, nevertheless, are OUR old buildings. A way of life that will most likely never see it's way in our town again. I can't help but be a little sad each time one of them goes to the ground. Let us be mindful and careful of how we run to the "future" - and be respectful of our unique Renton past.

Sometimes art IS life

Sometimes art is life and life is art. The colors we find in nature, reflected right back at us in our manmade constructs. Weirdly wonderful - these orange and blue synchronicities.

Liberty Cafe to get more music y'all

Word is out - there is going to be regular music bookings at the Liberty Cafe and it all begins on Friday, October 16th. Thomas Starks of TStarks Productions is going to be bringing the sound equipment and providing the music talent on a regular basis at the coffee hang so many Rentonites call their own. This should be fun - and give another dimension of diversion to the DTR scene.

If you haven't had a chance to see the artwork of Kristi Hand that is currently on show at the Liberty Cafe, you still have time. Kristi's work will still be up till the beginning of next month, and she has been adding new pieces weekly. The above work was sold almost as quickly as it came in.

New to the collection are also lovely watercolors - of which this photo does no justice to the color and depth of her work. The walls are spilling over with her boisterous colors and lively brush strokes. It would be a true shame if you missed any of it.

What I saw today in Renton

Halloween ala mexicano style - the window painting at the Tienda Mi Familia on Wells Street is colorful and slightly gritty, and a great place to shop for your meal provisions right in the DTR.

The Cedar Chest Antiques store has a doorman sporting some holiday flair today. If you get lost, this is the guy to help find you and probably a nifty vintage bargain or two.

Baby Benjamin is wearing some nice fall colors and looking quite the cutie in the arms of his loving auntie, Ms. Brandywine Divine.

Rod at the Antique Country Station on South Third was one of the first to get his scarecrow up this season - getting us all into the spirit right from the start.

Renton Fall Harvest Festival

Celebrate the arrival of fall, pumpkins and the season of harvest with a jaunt to the Renton Fall Harvest Festival and Chamber of Commerce Expo tomorrow, Saturday, from 10 am til 4 pm at the Piazza in downtown Renton.

What I love to report is that the Chamber of Commerce Expo, held in the Spirit of Washington Event Center, will have it's south side doors open - connecting the energy and crowd flow of the indoor and outdoor activities of the Fall Harvest at long last. This act of integrating the environments will make the experience so much more fun.

Are you ready to make yourself Film Famous?!

Renton Film Frenzy - the deadline for becoming the next famous Rentonite who owns a humming camcorder and a sense of style and adventure comes to an end tomorrow, so if you ever thought of writing, directing, filming and editing a film about Renton in a 50 hour time frame (Oct. 16-18), HOP TO IT! This is your last chance to jump on this gravy train.

Thank goodness my blogger buddies, Ms Lynar at AllAboutRenton and Rich Zwicker at Renton425 have already posted about this very sizzlin' event. I am lame and have been taking pics of scarecrows in windows and pumpkins in patches - so sue me. However, you can still follow this awesome link to the Renton Film Frenzy website and get involved, or at least stay tuned for the outcome of all this energetic film-mania. There will be a red carpet gathering at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center, paparazzi and popcorn to a viewing of the entrees that made the cut and got the awards ( Curvee Awards, that is). All in all - this about putting Renton on the map, because although we may be ahead of the curve, we are a little far removed from the glitter of Hollywood - for now.

Take a peak at the previous award winners of Renton Film Frenzy, Sam Graydon and Chris (Bob) Anderson, as they consider joining in another year of filming hubbub.

Pumpkins in the yogurt

Every Wednesday, Dawn Hart, manager, goes creative and creates a new flavor for the yummy frozen yogurt they serve up at Yoggi Yogurt. Until Friday, you can savor the Pumpkin Spice yogurt topped with festive candies or even fresh pomegranate or papaya (amongst a whole cornucopia of other tasty toppings). This was my taste treat today - and there was no sharing, by golly. I devoured every last spoonful - delicious, and you would never know it was full of healthy probiotics, low in calories and completely good for you (minus the trick or treat candies, mind you!)

Update: The Go Deli Sandwich Shop (owned by the same owners as Yoggi Yogurt and the corner Pho restaurant) that we have all been waiting for with baited breath, received it's final inspection yesterday (again!). The new word is that it will be open by the end of October. Whew! It's about to get colder and we all need some fresh, hot luncheon treats to get us through the winter months. So, keep your eyes open for a new midday meal destination soon.

Scarecrows for the lighthearted

St. Charles Place Antiques & Restoration
230 Wells Ave. S.
(425) 226 - 8427

He is a buccaneer, a pirate at heart and is willing to ravage the ladies - if you dare!
Things are getting a wee bit scarier as you walk the streets of downtown Renton - the scarecrows have come out of the fall closet and are lurking behind the glass panes of Renton merchants everywhere.

As we near this Saturday's Fall Harvest Festival & Chamber Expo at the Piazza, the fight for the best scarecrow continues, with new inclusions everyday. As promised - here are some I saw today.

Cedar Chest Antiques
916 South Third Street
(253) 271 - 0511

She will tell you your fortune and then take yours, leaving you with a deep fear of ravens and red to last you a lifetime.

Deb's Antiques, Gifts and Floral
920 S. Third St.
(206) 261 - 2802

Little Red Riding Hood will never know what bit her - 'cuz the wolf is lurking somewhere near and a basket full of goodies is only an appetizer for his dinner of Granny and more.

Fred likes to think he has become a sweethearted, desert eating skeleton but his thirst for blood has yet to be slaked.

Flora and Fauna of Renton

Flora and Fauna in Renton - amidst the colorful skies and warmth that sometimes also comes with our Pacific Northwest fall season, I saw some great views in Renton yesterday. Here are just a few to share with all of you.

The Great Blue Heron was perched on a log in front of Jones Park on Wells Street for all to see - oblivious to the cries of the children and dogs in the nearby lawns. Usually seen later in the day, this is a common haunt for this bird should you ever want a closer look for yourselves.

Bringing back childhood memories, this very fuzzy, very fat caterpillar was out for a stroll on the Cedar River Trail.

Though the most obvious of fall foliage would be the russet and red hues, these leaves are quietly turning from spring green to gold.

Some wildlife is better off left alone - like Frank Sutter here, sporting a homemade T-shirt that his daughter made expressly for him. Since all and sundry saw the warning sign well in advance of his arrival, we were well prepared.

Last Day at the Pea Patch

Another harvest is taking place - it is the last of the "P" Patch crops. The local Renton Community Garden is closing for the season and all the plot owners are clearing out the last of their crops. Lucky me - a kind neighbor and friend will be sharing some of her tomatoes with me this day as she reaps the benefits of her hard work one last time. Here are some photos on a lovely Fall day of the place where green thumbs spent laborious hours these last few weeks.

The color of the sky, the leaves as they begin to turn and the slight chilling of the air. I am basking in it.

A cake to bring the season in with- Apple/ Cranberry Cake

In keeping with the season and eating the fruits and vegetables that are fresh for the taking - it is time to start looking at apples once again. This recipe is completely inspired by my foodie blog crush, Smitten Kitchen, but modified to suit what was in the house and what the tastebuds demanded. Here I give you my take on the recipe, but click the above link and return to the original as well.

Fresh Apple Cake with Cranberries

4 apples, cored and diced into chunks (any kind will do, really)
1/2 cup cranberries (frozen is just fine)
1 Tbs of cinnamon
5 Tbs of sugar
1 Tbs lime or lemon juice, squeezed over the freshly cut fruit

3 cups of flour
1 Tbs of baking powder
1 tsp of salt
1 Tbs of cinnamon
a bit of ground nutmeg
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 eggs
2 1/2 tsp of vanilla
1/4 cup of rum ( or lemon juice/orange juice - whatever you've got)
1 cup of oil

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 pan (or bundt pan). Cut up apples and toss with cranberries, lime juice and cinnamon and sugar. Set aside.

In a bowl, mix the 2 sugars together with the eggs and vanilla. Add the oil. Then add the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg (which many would like to first sift together separately - which I would do if not so lazy). When well mixed, stir in the fruit and then pour into the greased pan. Cook for about 40 -45 minutes, and then begin checking to make sure your cake does not overcook. Cool completely and dust with confectioner's sugar. Will taste just great the next day.
Delish!

Harvesting cute thoughts

The Fall Harvest Festival & Chamber Expo is almost upon us - which means that there will be lots of window displays and storefront scarecrows. I love the decorating that goes on at this time of the year in Renton, and things are just beginning to heat up on that score.

Above, is just one of the festive windows at Happy Delusions on S. Third St. in the DTR, a home to artisans and craftsmen and a place for you to buy original goodies. I love Mary Clymer, owner of HD's, verve and holiday spirit - so why did I only nominate her window for the cutest of the moment? Because she may have some good competition springing up this week - so stay tuned and The Picaroon will bring you more cute windows as the week progresses.

Speaking of cute - what are you going to wear for Halloween this year? Junebug here, already has her outfit picked out. She is going as a Strawberry Marshmallow. Makes her highly squeezable and keeps her warm. Junie couldn't wait till the end of the month to wear her new favorite outfit, so if you are lucky, you will be able to see it yourself sometime soon.

Don't forget to put the Trick or Treat & "Olde Fashion Halloween Party in the Main Street Square (entrance at the 200 block of Main) on your calendar. Saturday, October 31st from 1 til 4pm. It is right behind the top block of South Third and free and family oriented and tons of fun.

The Fall Harvest Festival & Chamber Expo takes place this Saturday at the Piazza & Spirit of WA Events Center from 10 am till 4pm and is also free, family fun. The scarecrow contests that runs all week long in preparation for this event is enough to bring you downtown.

Renton is rolling in pumpkins

Need I say more? Found on my walks and meanderings in Renton. Gorgeous to behold. Harbingers of the season.

Old fashioned - but effective

Dressed to the nines in his evening performance finest, yesterday at the corner of South Third and Main, this member of a barbershop quartet that sang last night at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center was trying to attract an audience - the old fashioned way. Armed with a handwritten sign and a pair of very shiny black shoes to match his suit and tie, this young man smiled and waved at oncoming traffic in the hopes of getting a few more butts in the seats for the evening performance. (I didn't see the group listed on the website - so all the more reason to be inventive and find your audience).

He left the corner just as The Picaroon was arriving - though he did say that he would be back. I only wish I could have asked for a tune or two to go with the sign - that would have stopped a little traffic.

Still time to get in some Oktoberfest moves

If you haven't thrown down a few beers for the sake of Oktoberfest - don't worry, you still have time. While I have mentioned here in The Picaroon of the DC's Bar & Grill having at least 2 tap handles reserved for the season, that The Met is featuring Big Al's Oktoberfest beer on tap right now, and it goes without saying that the Dog and Pony and the Redhouse have got to have some fine stuff on tap - if you feel like meandering today, I have just the ticket. Georgetown.

One great stop would be to the bottle shop that was opened a year ago on the main drag in Georgetown (that being Airport Way S.) - Full Throttle Bottle - A Specialty Beer & Wine Store. Erica Cowan and Michael Tedin have an excellent selection of brews for you to take home, and wine if you need it. I am always in awe of just what they carry in the many glass fronted coolers that line one side of the shop. If you haven't been by, you should take a gander. Go more than once, and you can become a card carrying member of the Full Throttle Bottle "Bottle Cap Club" and get an 11 percent discount once you have purchased over $100 dollars.

Being shopkeepers together must suit Erica and Michael - cuz they are getting hitched. Maybe today, even ( it was either the shop was open for a year to the date today or today was marriage celebration time - either way, both good news). Last time I checked, Erica and Michael were living in Skyway, so there is our Renton connection, in case you needed one.

Congratulations to the happy couple!

I have another good reason for you to consider Georgetown as a great beer destination today - Oktoberbreast. Yes, you read that correctly. Today, at Smarty Pants, just a stone's throw down the street on Airport Way S. from Full Throttle Bottle, there is a breast cancer fund raising event going on from 2pm till 10pm. Free admission with beer, brats and bands. Local Rentonite, Janelle Pritchard will be pouring. You might also know her as the Brewery Goddess of Snoqualmie Brewery. Janelle says that you will probably get to see lots of tatooed people and see a few breasts - in keeping with the reason for the gathering, mind you. Beer and breasts, and all for a very good cause. I don't think I need provide anymore enticement.

Comfort stories to warm your heart

The weather has changed and so will our diet. As Fall begins, find out about the interesting roots of that food staple, beans, and hear some heart and hearth warming stories from storyteller Karol Brown.

Tomorrow, Saturday at 11:00 am, the Renton History Museum hosts another addition of their free speaker program, sponsored by Humanities Washington, with Karol Brown telling us "comfort stories with a pinch of nutrition education. spiced up with multicultural folktales, a sprinkle of poetry, and garnished with songs."

Everytime I attend, I learn something new and am highly entertained - what a welcome way to spend a late morning. Can't praise this program enough, Renton. This program tomorrow is suitable for all ages - so everyone is welcome to come.

Fall on a Renton doorstep

"Tell me, what is it
you plan to do with
your one wild
and precious life?
A ship is safe in port
but that is not what
ships are for"

Mary Oliver

The Picaroon begs your indulgence - we are off sick, and will catch up more with you another fine day.
